School Donates to Cancer Research

Can we make a change in cancer research? Students and faculty from the Elizabeth Lee Black School at the Barber National Institute answered with a resounding "Yes" as they collected spare change to benefit the John Kanzius Research Foundation. Classes participated in the 2nd Annual Penny Drive that raised $1,256.74 to help find a cure for cancer.

"Our students, families and staff at the Barber National Institute really wanted to come together in support of this organization that is doing such important work," said Dr. Maureen Barber-Carey, executive vice president of the Barber National Institute. "We recognize that the support from our community is essential to carrying out our mission, and that this is now an opportunity for us to give something valuable back to our community. Even in difficult economic times, our families and staff were happy to generously donate to this cause."

More than 230 students in 23 classrooms, ranging from preschool through high school age grades, participated in the fundraiser held Oct. 1 through Nov. 13.

The first Penny Drive to benefit the Kanzius Foundation was held in 2008 after a group of teachers suggested that students and faculty come together to support the organization.

Four classrooms with the highest collections were treated to their choice of a pizza or ice cream party to celebrate their accomplishment.
